Athletic trainers (ATs) are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. Athletic trainers work under the direction of a physician as prescribed by state licensure statutes.听 Athletic training encompasses the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of emergent, acute, or chronic injuries and medical conditions. Athletic training is recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA), Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA), and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as an allied health care profession.
The Boston College Club Sports Program has an Athletic Training Office that is open 30 hours a week during the academic year. The athletic trainers are responsible for attending to the medical needs of any club sport athlete and taking the appropriate steps necessary to prevent, evaluate, recognize, and assess athletic injuries sustained during club sport participation.
Participants are responsible for reporting injuries and scheduling an appointment with the Club Sports Athletic Trainer. Participants may also confer with Boston College Health Center. If the participant wishes to see their Primary Care Physician or receive care outside of Boston College, he/she must submit copies of medical documents as proof of care and clearance.听 The athletic trainers will determine when an athlete is cleared to return to practice or competition after sustaining an injury and will communicate this to the Assistant Director of Club Sports and the Club Coach.
For injuries that may occur at away contest, the safety officer must report the incident within 24 hours of the occurrence of an injury. The Club Sports Athletic Trainer or Assistant Director for Club Sports should be contacted as early as possible by phone in the event of a serious injury or illness, especially when hospitalization is required.
