Excellence in Teaching Day 2025

Excellence in Teaching Day is a full-day event that brings faculty from across 情色空间 together with nationally-recognized scholars to discuss timely questions about teaching and learning. This year Excellence in Teaching Day will be held on Monday, May 5 from 9:00-3:00 and will focus on the theme of "Teaching for Democracy."听 Registration for Excellence in Teaching Day will open in March.

Keynote Speaker: Danielle Allen

We are delighted to host as this year鈥檚 Excellence in Teaching Day keynote speaker. A professor of political philosophy, ethics, and public policy, Dr. Allen is James Bryant Conant University Professor at Harvard University. She is also Director of the at the Harvard Kennedy School and Director of the , a research lab focused on civic education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

In her talk, 鈥淓ducating for American Democracy,鈥 Allen will take up the question of higher education's responsibility to prepare the next generation of civic leaders: with values of pluralism, civil disagreement, and reflective patriotism at the center of the work.

ETD Reading Group

If you鈥檇 like a chance to discuss some of Professor Allen鈥檚 work in anticipation of her keynote, the CTE is organizing discussions of her work on Wednesday, April 23rd from 3:00 - 4:00 (on Zoom) and Thursday, April 24th from 12:00 - 1:00 (in the CTE鈥檚 Innovation Lab).听

We鈥檒l focus our conversation primarily on Allen鈥檚 2016 essay 鈥溾 where she argues that education鈥檚 goal should be to develop students鈥 鈥減articipatory readiness鈥 for civic agency. Those who want to do a deeper dive into Allen鈥檚 work can explore 鈥溾 (2016) or 鈥 (2024).

Lunch will be provided for those attending the in-person session and all instructors are welcome to join. The first ten people to register for either reading group session will receive a copy of Allen鈥檚 2022 book, .
